The small village of Backbarrow rests in the Leven Valley, with Brow Edge sitting above the river in an elevated location enjoying the magnificent views across the valley and as far as the Tops of ‘Coniston old Man’. On the edge of the village is the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam railway which meanders its way through this beautiful valley up to Lakeside on the shores of Lake Windermere.

The Windermere Steam cruisers start their idyllic journey from here, up the Lake to Bowness on Windermere and Ambleside. The Lakes Aquarium is also in this location, well worth a visit.

We have the Lakeland motor museum in the village which is full of interesting historical vehicles, memorabilia and history of the industrial village Backbarrow once was. Fell Foot Park on the edge of the Lake is only 1 mile away, a beautiful location for a family day out.

Grizedale Forest is easily accessible, and good for walks, mountain biking or take the ‘Go Ape’ Challenge!

The charming village of Cartmel famous for its race course is only 4.3 miles away, plenty of eateries, including the famous Simon Rogan’s restaurant L’Enclume – No. 1. in the country for food. The Grand stately home, Holker Hall only 5 miles away, enjoy the beautiful gardens and a tour of the house. You can also Book a delicious afternoon tea.

Hawkshead, which still retains all its charm and character, Coniston and Bowness on Windermere are only a short drive.

Visit ‘Hill Top’ the home of Beatrix Potter and see where she wrote her famous books about Peter Rabbit and friends, or enjoy the scenic journey to Grasmere and visit Dove Cottage, William Wordsworth’s first home from 1799 and then moving to Rydal Mount in 1813 and stayed here till his death in 1850.

Bishop Fell is in the Lake District National Park, in a lovely village which is a perfect choice to enjoy the Lake District’s natural beauty and hidden Gems, with many attractions and activities on the doorstep and lovely country pubs tucked away for you to explore. Lovely local walks from the door and mountain bike tracks in the area.
